As the Korean music industry dominate the world with their popular groups and songs that hit the global charts, people jam to their music because of the spectacular beats and dances. Korean music really became a part of our lives and really change the image of pop music.
For a kick start if you are a new K-Pop fan, here is a list of popular Korean Pop groups who already made a history in the music industry.
Sistar is composed of 4 members created by Starship entertainment and debuted in 2010. In December 2014, Sistar won the Best Female Group Award at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards. They performed at the KCON 2015 in Los Angeles, California.
Their fourth single, ‘So Cool’ debuted at number one at Billboard Korea K-Pop Hot 100 singles chart.
2PM a boyband formed by JYP Entertainment and debuted on 2008. 2PM was awarded with the ‘Most Popular Asian Singer’ award in Mandarin Honors 2010 in China and they taken home ‘Year’s Best Korean Singer’ they were the first Korean artist to win the ‘Most Popular Asian Singer’ award.
They were the opening act for nine Wonder Girls in United states in 2010,performed in the 8th annual Korea Times Music Festival in Los Angeles, California in May 2010. They also released a song for the FIFA 2010 world cup titled ‘What’s Your Celebration.’
Shinee is one of the best K-Pop boy group who made history in the Korean music industry. The group is comprised of 5 members now became 4 because of the death of one of their members this past 2017. The group was was formed by SM Entertainment in 2008. The media dubbed them as ‘Shinee Trend’ because of the fashion trend they set among students.
Last August 2008, the popular group released their first Korean studio album ‘The Shinee World’, which won the Newcomer Album of the Year at the 23rd Golden Disk Awards. In 2012 the group released ‘Sherlock’, which became the fifth most sold album of the year with over 180,000 copies sold. They have been included in the Forbes list of Korea Power Celebrity multiple times, once in 2014 and again in 2016.
F(x) is a group created by SM Entertainment in 2009. The group is composed of 5 members now 4 since one member departed in 2015. They were recognized for their experimental style and eclectic, electropop-based sound. F(x) is one of the recognized K-Pop groups internationally, they become the first K-pop act to perform at SXSW.
Their acclaimed second album, Pink Tape, was the only K-pop album on US music channel Fuse’s ’41 Best Albums of 2013′.
One of the biggest K-pop group that made history is Super Junior. Super Junior is comprised of 13 member group but debuted with 12 members. SUJU has over six million likes on Facebook. Upon the release of their best single ‘Sorry sorry’ on 2009, the group was recognized internationally.
They are the best-selling K-pop group for 4 years in a row and earned 13 music awards in Mnet Asian Music Awards, 16 in Golden Disk Awards, won the ‘Favorite Artist Korea’ at the 2008 MTV Asia Awards, last 2012, they were nominated for ‘Best Asian Act’ in MTV Europe Music Awards. In 2015, they won the ‘International Artist’ and ‘Best Fandom’ in the Teen Choice Awards.
Wonder Girls is a girl group created by JYP entertainment in 2007. The group was co-managed by Creative Artists Agency in the United States. They were the opening act in the Jonas Brothers’ world tour performing their hit single ‘Nobody’ in English. ‘Nobody’ charted at 76 in Billboard Hot 100 making the Wonder Girls the first South Korean group to enter the chart.
They were known as ‘Korea’s Retro Queens’ and reportedly sold over 19,000 copies in America.
EXO is formerly comprised of 12 members now they are 9 as 3 of the members left. The group debuted in 2012 and created by SM Entertainment. With their album XOXO they were the best-selling korean artist to sold a million copies in 12 years. They were also dubbed as the ‘Quadruple Million seller group’ as they sold over 1 million copies in each album release (recent is ‘The War’).
The group performed in the ‘Pyeongchang Winter Olympics 2018’ with their 2 hit singles Growl and Power. Their song ‘Power’ was also played in the Dubai Fountain Show. They were also included in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ as they were the first group to win most Daesangs in MAMA awards. Their song ‘Ko Ko Bop’ dominated the world and a challenges called ‘Ko Ko Bop challenge’ was created.
The Queens of K-pop is composed of 4 members: CL, Dara, Bom and Minzy. They are formed by YG entertainment in 2009. They appear alongside with one of the best K-pop group Big Bang in the song ‘Lollipop’. 2NE1 was considered as the most successful and best-selling K-Pop girl group in South Korea.
The group sold 66.5 million records, Billboard magazine ranked 2NE1 as one of the best K-Pop girl groups on the past decade lastly, The New York Times named 2NE1’s concert at the Prudential Center in New Jersey as one of the ‘Best Concerts of 2012’. They indeed made a history and deserves their title as the most successful K-Pop girl group in Korea.
The kings of K-Pop as what they were called because they spread the Korean wave internationally is comprised of 5 members and created by YG Entertainment. They were admired by Korean and international artists because diverse use of music genres, personal involvement in producing their own records and stage performances.
Their album Tonight(2011) lead them to be the Best Worldwide Act winner at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, Alive (2012), became the first Korean album to chart on the Billboard 200 lastly, Made (2016), involves their chart-topping singles, winning the group their third Artist of the Year award at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards and their first at the 2015 Melon Music Awards. The group’s supporting world tour gathered 1.5 million people and it was the most attended concert tour headlined by a Korean act in history.
Who wouldn’t even know the best girl group! Girls Generation snatched the hearts and wigs of every K-pop stan existing in this world. Girls Generation is a nine-member group before and 5 member group who debuted at 2007. They are known as Sonyeo Sidae in Korean. Girls Generations popularity sky rocket upon their release of their single ‘Gee’ in 2009.
Girls Generation’s Japanese album debut became one of the best seller in 2011. They appeared on ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ in 2012 and became the K-pop Focus on New York. GG also won massive awards one of it is the Video of the Year at YouTube Music Awards in 2013.
